Clinical Hypnotherapy

What is hypnotherapy?

A facilitated therapy using hypnosis to address symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and any underlying anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, fears or phobias that can often exacerbate gastrointestinal problems. It can also be used to explore eating behaviours such as binge eating, comfort eating, food avoidance and addiction.

What is hypnosis like?

Hypnosis is a meditative-style state that we all do naturally daily that allows the conscious mind to relax and your unconscious mind to take a more active role in problem solving. It brings a sense of focus. Some liken it to being engrossed in a film, book or creative activities. Others say it is like daydreaming while driving a familiar route, running or walking. For many it is deeply relaxing.

What it is not?
  • Stage hypnosis which is engineered for entertainment and has absolutely no therapeutic value
  • Falling asleep
  • Losing your autonomy
How do you choose a hypnotherapist?

Always ensure that the hypnotherapist is registered with a professional body such as the Australian Hypnotherapists’ Association. This means that they:

  • Have received over 1,000 hours of formal training covering a wide area of clinical applications,
  • Have ongoing supervision, educational and insurance obligations, and
  • Are bound by that association’s code of conduct which includes a code of ethics.
Are there any rebates for hypnotherapy?

Some private health insurers offer rebates. Please check with your provider for specific conditions covered. Medicare does not currently offer rebates.

Are there guarantees/success rates?

No. Like all therapies there are no guarantees. Progress depends on individuals’ engagement in the process and where they want to take it.

Who is best suited to hypnotherapy?

People that want to make a change and are curious exploring options to facilitate that change.
