Dietitian or Nutritionist
People are often confused about the differences between professionals’ job titles. Here we break down the key differences allowing you to make an informed decision about who you are seeing.
Dietitians
Dietitians, unlike GPs and other health professionals, have received at least four years of professional education and practical training in human biology and nutrition science. They know a lot about food, eating and medical conditions related to food.
To be registered as an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), dietitians undertake standardised training, continued education and are accountable to a professional body (Dietitians Australia). Dietitians are registered with Medicare and can offer rebates to clients on selected plans.

Nutritionists
Not all nutritionists are created equal. Nutritionists can be highly qualified to offer advice.
However, since the term “nutritionist” is not covered by any legal requirement for specific education or training, anyone can complete a simple online course and still call themselves a nutritionist.
Nutritionists are not registered with Medicare and cannot offer rebates to clients.
